Three New Marine & Hydrokinetic Funding Opportunities Announced by US Department of Energy

The US Department of Energy recently announced two new Funding Opportunity Announcements (FOAs) for marine energy and announced its intent to issue a third very soon. The FOAs request Letters of Intent from interested parties seeking funding for research in 3 areas but have relatively quick turnarounds. The dates shown below are the US closing dates for submission of Letters of Intent. The three FOAs cover the following areas:

Marine and Hydrokinetic Environmental Effects Assessment and Monitoring (due on 16 May 2013).

This is an area of research developed jointly by DoE and the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) to increase understanding of the potential environmental effects of marine energy devices.

Marine and Hydrokinetic System Performance Advancement (due on 3 June 2013)

DoE is offering up to US$ 13 million to develop and test technologies and components for marine & hydrokinetic energy systems. DoE will select up to 10 awards to develop advanced controls, power systems and structures to harness energy from waves, tidal range and tidal currents. DoE will invest in the following:

  • Advanced Controls: up to 6 awards in the range US$ 0.5 – 2.0 million
  • New Generation Power Take-off: up to 2 awards of US$ 3.0 million
  • Optimized Structures: up to 2 awards of US$ 1.0 million)

Applicants are required to submit a letter of intent by 13 May 2013.

Marine and Hydrokinetic Infrastructure Development (Intent to Issue)

DoE intends to fund two university- or national laboratory-led projects to conduct preliminary designs for open water fully energetic testing facilities for wave energy technologies. It is not clear when this FOA will be offered other than “some time later in 2013”.

More information on these FOAs can be found on the USDOE website
