Membership
Who should join:
AWATEA welcomes membership enquiries from anyone interested in marine energy, particularly from the following:
- Marine energy project developers
- Electricity generation, distribution and retail organizations
- Marine construction, fabrication and services companies
- Central government departments and agencies
- Regional/local government and development agencies
- Consultants and contractors in the marine sector
- Related incorporated societies
- Interested individuals
- Overseas organizations and individuals
Membership Categories
There are four categories of Membership:

Note:
Professional membership has been discounted by $100 + GST from 1 April 2008 - 31 March 2009.
*Inland Revenue Department has confirmed that GST is payable by all members, including overseas members.
Please note that acceptance for membership or otherwise will be at the discretion of the Executive, which also reserves the right to determine the appropriate category for membership applicants.
Details of the criteria for each membership category are given below.
Corporate Membership
Corporate membership will be available to companies or organizations, with more than twenty-five full-time employees. This class of membership is intended for organizations which derive or seek to derive significant income and/or benefit from their involvement in the marine and/or energy industry.
Professional Membership
Professional membership will be available to companies and organizations with no more than twenty-five full-time staff and to individuals, who participate in the marine and/or energy industries. This class of membership is intended for consultants, consultancies and small businesses, which are active or are seeking to become active in the industry.
Non-profit Membership
Non-profit membership will be available to organizations, which have a non-financial interest in marine and/or energy industries (e.g., Government and public sector agencies, other industry associations). Non-profit members must transfer to professional or corporate membership, if they receive any financial reward from their interest in marine energy.
Individual Membership
Individual membership will be available to individuals, who have a non-financial interest in marine and/or energy industries. Individual members must transfer to professional or corporate membership, if they receive any financial reward from their interest in marine energy.

- Pre-press information on relevant developments in marine energy
- Monthly AWATEA newsletters, giving details of AWATEA, New Zealand and international marine industry news, including a diary of future events
- Briefings on specific and relevant issues for marine energy
- Access to password-protected pages on AWATEA website, which contains an archive of AWATEA newsletters, past conference presentations and reports, AWATEA submissions on Government policies
- Access to the outputs of AWATEA work streams, currently including:
- Marine Energy Supply Chain Directory and study
- IEA's Ocean Energy Systems Executive meetings
- IEC's technical committee on technical standards for Marine Energy - Wave and Tidal Energy Converters (TC114)
Networking
- Opportunity to network with potential customers, partners, service providers and equipment suppliers both in New Zealand and overseas, as well as representatives from central and regional government and regulatory organizations
- Information exchange with other parties interested in marine energy
Influence
- A collective voice with access to Government at all levels on issues relating to marine energy
- Members can stand for election to the AWATEA Executive • Rights to vote in elections of Executive members
- Rights to vote on matters raised at the Annual General meetings, special and general meetings
- Members are consulted on proposed AWATEA submissions, have the opportunity to contribute to and comment on proposed submissions and to attend meetings arranged between AWATEA and related parties to discuss submissions

Industry Development
- Participation in development of central and regional government policy development
- Participation in development of regulatory frameworks

Reduced Prices
- Members receive reduced prices for registration at AWATEA conferences and meetings
- Members may receive reduced prices for registration at other AWATEA events, including mini-conferences and other meetings
