OES-IA
In March 2008 the Minister of Energy, Hon. David Parker, accepted an invitation from the International Energy Agency (IEA) for New Zealand to join the IEA’s Ocean Energy Systems Implementing Agreement (OES-IA). He also appointed AWATEA as its representative and the Executive Officer has since attended a number of OES-IA Executive meetings since that time.
The OES-IA aims to facilitate and co-ordinate ocean energy research, development and demonstration through international co-operation and information exchange, leading to the deployment and commercialisation of sustainable, efficient, reliable, cost-competitive and environmentally sound ocean energy technologies (www.iea-oceans.org).
New Zealand had attended the 6-monthly OES-IA Executive meetings as an Observer since May 2006 and became the 15th country to join the Executive in New York in April 2008.
AWATEA’s International Representative, Dr. John Huckerby, was elected Chairman of the OES-IA for 2 years for 2009–2010 and was re-elected to serve as Chairman for 2011–2012.
