Welcome to the Aotearoa Wave and Tidal Energy Association

The Aotearoa Wave and Tidal Energy Association (AWATEA) was established in April 2006 to promote the uptake of marine energy in New Zealand.

Wave and tidal energy is sustainable, clean, available, reliable and forecastable. We believe that New Zealand can source a significant proportion of its new energy supply from marine energy in the medium term.

AWATEA's 3rd Annual Conference - blue energy: made waves!

blue energy: making waves!

AWATEA held its third successful conference at Te Papa in Wellington on Tuesday 19 May 2009.  Over 80 people heard the Minister of Energy and Resources give the National-led coalition government’s views on marine energy.  The Minister announced the second award under the Marine Energy Deployment Fund and announced that the 3rd Round will open on 31 July 2009 and close on 23 November 2009.

The conference registrants were then treated to 15 excellent presentations on a wide range of topics in marine energy, ranging from resource assessments to consenting projects and connecting them to the national grid.

More details can be found on the conference page.

Membership

Membership of AWATEA is open to all but especially for marine device developers, project developers and other energy and/or marine industry participants. Overseas members are welcome.

AWATEA is also a Maori word meaning 'new dawn' or 'new beginning'. An appropriate name for a new energy source that will play an increasing role in the 21st Century meeting New Zealand´s energy needs and contributing to a secure, competitive and resilient economy.
